Summary Reflection of Issue in Publication and Design

As I am from a business school student, taking up this subject has been a challenging experience for me. However as time passed by and also thanks to my lecture Miss Jenny, I have learned a handful type of publication design such as on the blogs, magazines, fact sheets design and even making short video clips.

From what I have learned in this course, blogging and making video is by far the most interesting assessment in my university experience. Likewise, I can freely express myself on the video and sharing useful information on the blog for the reader to understand the current issue on the media.

Apart from that, the syllabus of publication and design have also taught me on how “picture and words are important to merge together” (Schriver, K, 1997) or the “effectiveness by using screen print out or paper print out with the linear text to communicate to the audience.” (Bernhardt, 1986)

Lastly, I would like to thank everyone from my peers to my lecture which gave me support and idea for this course of subject. Thank You !!!

Stereotyping & media representation; cultural/ situational context

In today society, stereotyping has been an issue around the world where most people have been offended by their belief and culture on the media. As we know that, the media and the internet have been globalization sharing content such as newspaper, films, video games, books, or even a video clip on the internet.

Here are a some video which show the public that react to stereotypes

As most of the people in the society have argued that, gender stereotyping among races and religion or belief are always the main cause of stereotype. For example in the media, “celebrities have always the symbols of media portrays based on their bodies to get public response such as attractive, desirable, good or unintentionally receive comment like bad, ugly or fat.” (McConnell, M, 2003)

“This famous actor Jack Black was known to be famous and funny at his look, but was criticizing as a fat guy.” (Tourtellotte, B, 2008)

Apart from that, comic books and cartoons could be stereotyping among people through the words or drawing which criticize on their culture or belief. As we know that, the purpose of stereotyping on the cartoon or comic was to entertain and create funny humor jokes as to attract the attention of the viewer. For example, “these cartoon or comics could be used as an effective ways to deliver the messages to the viewer within a very short period of time.” (Naru & Grace, 2010)

In addition to that, technology on the internet have also come into an issue where people are starting a war against the smart device developer that were Andriod vs IOS. As a new survey has found out that different gender apply to different types of usages and choice of devices. For example as accordance to LiveScience.com reviews, most of the “Andriod user are claims to be a male at the age from 18 to 34 with the annual income less than $100,000 and iPhone/IOS users were mostly female at the age of 35 above which an annual income of $200,000.” (It, 2011)

As a result of these, a stereotype is always there where everyone in this world is not treated equally. Human being may have to accept this fact and think differently and be more open to some issue by overcoming it.

Situational/ Cultural context; journalism ethics; gender issues & news representation

In the front pages of media these days, female photograph have been capture as an advertising marketing icon to promote out a product or a glamorous items to the
public's. As these could shows that most female model or idols are mainly based on their looks, appearances and bodies appealing to gain attention of their personality. Due to these is because, the number of male journalism have been increased which female icon have becoming their main attention for the public to see it front line.

In the world of journalism, “researcher has found out that male journalist is greater in number as compare to female journalist.” (Bazelon, E, 2012)  In this industry, the number of males has eventually dominion the position of journalism as their main occupation. For example, “most of the male journalism is mainly focus on the issue which concern to the politics, economic and foreign policy on the current market.” (Bazelon, E, 2012) As these have eventually creates opportunity for the male to enhance this position as their profession.

However, this issue does not lead to stereotype among genders as there are still hands full of female journalism working in this role. For example, they still associate with the media to provide info and coverage of news for the society.

As we move on the female journalism, “some people would claim that most of the female reporters are mainly assigned for the soft beat topics which would only able to covers topic such as entertainment, travels and or etc.”  (Shaukat A, 2012) One of these reason is because, “the number of women writers who are involve on the journalism media are hardly published as their facts and content are not that solid as compare to male journalism.” (Doll, J, 2012)

Apart from that, these could also conclude that some women are more towards a feminine ways where they are “less confident enough or ‘chicken out’ when they have the opportunity to speak out” (Shaukat A, 2012) Therefore, these could lead them a challenge as compare to male in the role of journalism. As a result of these, “gender based on stereotyping have eventually beat the job position of journalism which male are more comfortable to hold on this profession.”(Shaukat, A, 2012)

Ethical Publishing principles-piracy & file sharing sites; copyright regulations & fair use; new music business model & new media ecosystem

In the music industry, technology have change the way we listen to song and purchase the music as compare to 15 years back then. In the current era, publishers have been commercializing their albums through the internet media such as YouTube to advertise the song and applying iTunes for user to purchase the song in digital format.

By according to the bar chart above, the statistic have shown that in 1991 to 2006, the number of music store have been tremendously decline from 9500 to 2000 store across America. Due to these reason is because, people on the internet have starting to download song and reduce the number of people walk into the store to purchase CDs.  As these could be the factor where “Apple inc have introduce a music store which called as “iTunes” in 2002, which enable user to search for any new or old album through their data base and purchase them online.” (Daniel, R, 2007) As accordance to the Wal-Mart report, “they have claims that the sales of iPod + iTunes have eventually doubled up the sales albums with a deep catalog of song directory for older and more obscure albums.” (Daniel, R, 2007)

However, user have been misused the services provider for file sharing and P2P network provider. For example, there are number of list for file sharing website such as LimeWire, Bit Torrent, UTorrent, Pirate Bay, Napster and etc.

As for these days, piracy on file sharing is unstoppable where every day and everywhere in the world, new file content will be uploading into the internet which allow user to download illegally content.  Apart from that, government has also take into serious action to stop the online piracy traffic by shutting down the developer. However, “research team has proved that file sharing technology is impossible to terminate the network as the internet is an open source of services provider. “ (Nguyen, T, 2012)

However as an ethical of the music industry business, reputation is always an important role model for the musician as to maintain and create sustainability for the business. For example, “talent and skill for a single will eventually sustain the company reputation and attract people to buy their albums or poster of the singer.” (Hatschek, K, 2006)  Therefore, music industry may have created albums which are limited edition and collectable items which allow people to continue and have trust to the company

E-book publishing; new business model & new media ecosystem; readers’ preferences/ expectations

On the US market these days, E-book publisher are now expanding their business model to the extent that allow readers for easy access connectivity and made convenient for the user to purchase digital copy through online.

This possibility which made it happen should give credit to the fast improvement of technology and “e-reading electronic gadgets such as the new Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble.” (Hill, S, 2012)  One of these reason is because, those gadgets have provides the functionality and features in reading experience which able to substitute with a book. Apart from that, those touch devices on the market have becoming a digital trend for all of us to have unlimited access of books to carry around as a portable devices. Therefore, it could possibly change a consumer reading method and affect the print books sales to decrease on the market.

“As according to the Amazon.co.us, they have reported that the sales of kindle E-books have been surpass the sales of printed books through online.” (Malik, S, 2012)

However in Malaysia, E-book reading is still not a viral hit for Malaysian to purchase online books or digital copy. Due to these reason is because, there are still some drawback or barrier of copyright and censorship for Malaysian to purchase or rent the copy through the internet. For example, one of the main reasons behind is that Amazon account is still not available in Malaysia. “According to social reader in Malaysia, the reader may have to purchase a kindle gift cards on the website to use as a credit card by purchasing books content online. As Malaysian Credit card are not acceptable to purchase any books through Amazon store.” (Rozario, K, 2012)

In terms of Malaysian aspect, cost is always an issue for the community as people will always go for a cheaper price for their reading material.  “As the newly Kindle Touch have been recently announce in the US with the selling price at $99 which about RM 300. However in Malaysia, there have been a 33% of tax premium for all imported shipment goods which have eventually hike up the price at RM500+.” (Rozario, K, 2012)  As a result of these, consumer decided to fall back and decided to purchase a better product such as IPad or Galaxy Tab.
